The way we eat can have a great influence on our daily life, health and mood. We can see a lot of people paying close attention to what they eat, because they want to stay healthy, in shape or lose weight. There are so many kinds of foods and diets, that we can safely say that there is something for anyone and any kind of need. Moreover, there are even foods for your mind, that can affect your mood and appetite of life. Keeping in mind that we should always be careful what we eat, we should also be careful how we eat and when we eat. Our body gives us lots of signals of how it’s doing and what it needs, and we need to learn how to listen to it.

For example, the most common mistakes people do, is overeating or eating late. These two are never good for you, because constantly overeating will most likely make you overweight on the long run, and eating late will do the same, plus it can make you have an uncomfortable sleep and have nightmares. There’s also that thing called “mindless eating”, meaning you will eat just because you are hungry, you will not pay attention what you eat and how much, and even worse you will be concentrated to something else such as driving or working.

Mindfulness

Our goal here is to have better eating practices, because they are as much as important as what we eat. It’s important to enjoy your food, never rush eating it, feel all the flavors, spices and texture. There’s a difference between eating because we are hungry, and because we want it – and here comes that old saying ” are you eating to live or are you living to eat?”. Pay full attention whenever you eat to your food, regardless if it’s a healthy salad or a fatty burger with fries and soda near it, don’t just chew and swallow, always have normal sizes of food and never eat until you feel that you pop like a balloon. Finish your meal, and even if you still feel like there’s room for more, just wait a little, because in about twenty minutes you will feel just alright. It’s all about enjoying the moment and connecting with your food.

Tips and tricks

If you think you’ve missed out with your food lately, and lost the pleasure of eating, feeling like you just eat to move forward in the day and that’s it, just take a deep breath and relax, because everything can be just fine as long as you really want it to. There are lots of things that can be done to improve this chapter of your life. Let’s explore a few ways of how we can make the best out of eating for us.

  • First and most important, is what you eat. As we said, food can have a very big influence over our body’s health and state of mind. If you think your diet is unhealthy, you can make changes to it so that your body gets everything it needs from the food, and even more important, the food helps your body in many ways – it helps us regenerate body tissue, it helps us heal, can make us see better, can make us feel better. If you think you need to know more about food nutrition, it’s always best that you consult with a specialized nutritionist in order to tailor the diet that’s best for you. And don’t get us wrong, by saying diet, we don’t mean starving to lose weight, but just adjusting something here and there, so that we can get the most of our food.
  • Concentrate on your food. When you eat, you should avoid looking at television, or working and even worse, driving. Our brain is good at multi tasking, but when it comes to eating, you should let it handle the food. Make sure you chew properly and slowly, never rush to swallow, and never eat too much.
  • Be relaxed, think about your food, how it was made, be thankful for it, meditate a bit about it. Just feel the pleasure of eating, all the aromas mixed. Avoid thinking about food as a fabricated good, and see more beyond the meaning of word “food”.
  • Try to always eat with someone, don’t go alone. Food is better with friends.
  • Avoid compulsive or stress eating, because our emotions can sometimes make us eat too much, and things that are not that healthy for our body. Eat when you are hungry, not when your emotions get you.
  • Pay more attention to your body, because it talks to you in it’s ways. It can tell you when you are not eating the right stuff, or that it got everything it needed and there’s no need for more.
  • Appreciate it more when you are eating. Appreciate the moment, the people you’re there with, the meal and it’s taste. Try to think about how your food got on your plate, how many people were involved on the way, and how it got so delicious.
  • Eat at home, avoid to eat all the time out. Experience the pleasure of cooking with your loved one, of taking small sips to taste it to see if it needs more salt or pepper. Cooking is not just a job, but also a joy!
  • We know food is delicious, and that’s why many people are overweight, because they simply love it. You can still enjoy your food to the max, while still staying in shape, so just remember to keep an eye on your physical exercise and your diet, because they are the most important things when it comes to your health.
  • Always try something new! There are so many kinds of foods, that you would probably need a lifetime to try them all, and life is short and complicated, so what are you waiting for? You have no idea what marvels of food await for you!

Conclusion

By paying more attention to your food and how you eat it, by connecting with it, the only winner here is you. Enjoy your food slowly, respect it, appreciate it, be thankful for it. All these can make your life much happier, and your body and mind healthier.
